about us

Human Company is a group of artists challenging the boundaries of performance experience, blurring the distinctions between theatre, dance, image, language, and sound to create a new theatre of engagement. Our pieces are developed in the rehearsal room through process and exploration to create work that is energetic, passionate and playful. We hope to stimulate a dialogue in the performance community about what theatre is and what it can be in both open forum discussions and with our work on stage. Ultimately, we want to make work that evokes what is unique and vital about the theatrical art form: its inherent demand that we bear witness through risk, investment and vulnerability.

Company History

HUMAN COMPANY was founded in October 2006 in response to our desire to create a forum to devise, develop and produce new performance work relying on essential theatrical means. That meant, primarily, the presence of the performer in space and time as an evocative force working beyond any boundaries separating dance and theatre and including a full palette of image, sound and physical resources. We were already developing Schiele at that time, and soon started work developing Orpheus and Eurydice. To our good fortune and as a test to our human resources, we secured production opportunities for both these shows within two weeks of each other. Orpheus and Eurydice premiered at Chashama in early August 2007, while a fully staged but preliminary version of Schiele was part of the American Living Room Festival at HERE Artspace in mid-August, 2007. We are seeking out further production options for both of these shows, while we continue to establish a more solid foundational structure to help develop and produce new work.
